Games: Dreamcast Releases [ドリームチャストのゲーム]

The Sega Dreamcast was an amazing piece of hardware that was well and truly ahead of its time but it met a swift and early decline, ceasing production in 2001 after only releasing in 1999. Despite that it managed to sell 9.13 million units in it's very short lifetime.

The biggest notch in the Dreamcast's belt was CODE: Veronica, a title that was for a while exclusive to the console and was a stunning graphical jump for the series. It kept the campiness of the prior games, but had another element to it that was very dark and unsettling for the overall story. An updated 'director's cut' version of CV was released on the Dreamcast in Japan exclusively called 'Complete', which added almost 10 more minutes of cutscenes in addition to other internal bug fixes, updated models and textures for certain things, and even more exposition. This version ultimately was the international version that became standard when it was ported to the PS2 in the wake of the DC's decline.

As part of the 5th anniversary, all prior games in the series save for the very original were ported to the DC as well. 2 and 3 are very interesting in specific as they are more or less a port the PC version(s) of the games due to the Windows CE OS on the Dreamcast.

Title: BIOHAZARD 2 Value Plus (バイオハザード2 バリュープラス) [DC01]
Catalogue: T-1214M
Released: 22/12/1999
Retail: 4,800円
Region: NTSC-J
Scans: Front | Back | Manual | Sample Page | Obi | Disc 1 | Disc 2

Information:
Value Plus is an interesting release. It was pushed out to not only bring in hype relating to CODE:Veronica given it had a trial version disc packaged with it, but was also to fill the gap that CODE:Veronica left thanks to its delays. Value Plus also would be our best console re-issue of Biohazard 2 up until the Gamecube iteration. Value Plus came with all the trimmings: all of Leon A-B/Claire A-B, 4th Survivor, Tofu, and the new Extreme Battle mode that was introduced in the Dual Shock version of Biohazard 2 -- all playable from the get go now without need for unlocking -- in addition to a model and art gallery where high-resolution (for the time) artwork and models could be viewed.

As with all other Biohazard games on the Dreamcast, Value Plus has VMU support and is used as a visual ECG on the controller without a need to check the menu to see your status, along with an ammo counter for the weapon you currently have in use.

Title: BIOHAZARD CODE:Veronica Limited Edition (バイオハザードコード:ベロニカ限定版) [DC02]
Catalogue: T-1210M
Released: 02/03/2000
Retail: 6,980円
Region: NTSC-J
Scans: Slipcase Front | Slipcase Back | Front | Back | Manual | Sample Page | Disc 1 | Disc 2

Information:
CODE:Veronica was a landmark for the series, with Okamoto calling it the 'true sequel to Biohazard 2' for its continuation of Claire's story path. The game changed up the survival horror pre-set that the series had become known for at that point, removing fixed camera angles in a lot of areas for a panning camera system, fully in-engine rendered backgrounds and environments, and extremely detailed character and enemy models. The game would go on to be one of the Dreamcast's only titles to topple the 1 million sales mark.

The original game came in two releases -- a limited edition version which was given a unique slipcase and if pre-ordered came with a metal plaque featuring Claire's prison ID for Rockfort that featured a unique issue number, and a standard retail release with no added bonuses. The limited edition slipcase release was also the only version of the game issued in the special release Dreamcast models that were brought out for the anniversary of the series (see [HA01] here).

My copy is a bit beaten up, the previous owner didn't retain the obi and the slipcase has suffered UV damage making it crack apart at the seams, but I do thankfully have a fully sealed copy with my Claire version Dreamcast linked above to forever cherish.
