Books: Novels [小説]

Novels go hand-in-hand with games like Biohazard. With such a diverse canon to play with and either expand on or simply capture in words, the series has earned quite a number of novels under its belt. Japan began novels for the series in 1997 with 'The Beginning', which was a novel published within the limited edition artbook 'The True Story Behind BIO HAZARD', given away with pre-orders of the Sega Saturn game. The novel front grew quiet until S.D. Perry took up the reins in the US. Eventually, her novels were also translated back into Japanese, while other original novels which never saw the light of day outside of Germany and Japan were published for the 5th anniversary.

Out of all the novels, the only ones which really slip into the set-canon from the game are Rose Blank, To The Liberty and Beast of the Northern Seas. All of these books feature other plots and story elements which sit comfortably in the canon of the games, and none of the novels have any real direct interaction with the game canon characters. It is a shame they have never been published in english. The only exception to this is The Beginning, which from an original-game standpoint before the remake later on was a very big set up for the entire narrative featuring main characters galore. It received a very limited English release, and an actually solid translation to boot.

The blurb on the back describes the book as follows:

The people of England are shaken as a reincarnation of the Jack the Ripper style serial female murders breaks out. The suspect captured, Jack Trump, is being transported to America, for unknown reasons. Even more baffling, the means of transfer being prepared is a large passenger boat owned by Umbrella, named "Liberty." On board, a new virus developed by Umbrella is waiting for the optimum host. Suddenly, the American Navy surges onboard, including a mysterious woman who is watching Jack. When all of these interests collide, on a boat with no escape, a one-sided hunt begins....

A Capcom Official Biohazard Short Story First Prize Winning Work.

This is one of those books that I'd love to be able to one day sit down and try to translate if I found the time. The story sounds very interesting, and the whole of it being confined on a boat is reminiscent of Gun Survivor 4 and Gaiden.

Title: Biohazard〈1〉Umbrella's Conspiracy (バイオハザード〈1〉アンブレラの陰謀) [NV04]

Released: 25/07/2004
Retail: 970円
Language: Japanese

Information:
Umbrella's Conspiracy follows the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team as they struggle to survive the Mansion Incident which started the entire series off. The text is as true to the original as possible, translation wise.

The really interesting thing with the C・NOVELS publications is that one of the best and well known Biohazard fan artist was asked to do the cover work. In addition to a front and back cover, the slip jacket inner wings have unique art, and the book features profile shots of all the major characters present in the book. The artist in question is Wolfina, who painted the covers digitally using Corel Painter.

Wolfina has been working on Biohazard art basically since the games first came out, and still does Biohazard art to this day which is posted on their Pixiv account.

The cover features really lovely art by Wolfina. This is also the first and only time an official publication of S.D. Perry's original books for the series has featured artwork of her original characters. All of the characters have profile shots illustrated in the first pages of the books, and are all over the inner wings of the book.

Title: Biohazard〈3〉City of the Dead (バイオハザード〈3〉死者の街) [NV06]
Publisher: C・NOVELS (中央公論新社)
ISBN: 4-12-500886-x
Released: 25/01/2005

Language: Japanese
Scans: Cover | Inner Wing (1) | Inner Wing (2) | Profile Page (1) | Profile Page (2)

Again, the cover features artwork by Wolfina. I really dig the eeriness of the covers of the JP version of this book. Wolfina chose to depict the darker side of the games with the sewers as a focus rather than the burning streets the US cover has. Since the book is written to Leon A, Claire B, the front and back feature Leon and Ada, while on the inner wings you've got Claire, HUNK and William Birkin.

Title: Biohazard〈4〉Underground World (バイオハザード〈4〉地下世界) [NV07]

Scans: Cover | Inner Wing (1) | Inner Wing (2) | Profile Page (1) | Profile Page (2)

Information:
The text is as true to the original as possible, translation wise. In this case that's a bad thing because this is the most awful book of the series done by S.D. Perry -- incredibly rushed, half the size of other releases, and reads okay-ish until about halfway where it then turns into a shitshow with the most out of character Wesker seen in 'official' material.

On the upside: more awesome art by Wolfina.

Title: Biohazard Umbrella Chronicles SIDE A (バイオハザード アンブレラ・クロニクルズ SIDE A) [NV10]
Publisher: Kadokawa Publishing Co., Ltd. (角川書店)
ISBN: 978-4-04-352211-8
Released: 25/12/2007
Retail: 552円
Language: Japanese
Scans: Front, Back etc

Information:
Umbrella Chronicles SIDE A and SIDE B are, essentially, novelisations of the game. The books gloss lightly over the re-capped scenarios, but expand further in text the special canonical side plots and the final mission of the game which saw the end of Umbrella. The blurb on the back describes the book as follows:

On an express train, Rebecca and Billy are attacked by passengers who have been turned into Zombies. In a house, Chris and Jill desperately fight for their lives. Moreover, the destruction of Raccoon City continues. This is all related to the corporate giant, the Umbrella Corporation, and the dark, secret dealings of Albert Wesker. The virus that changes living things into zombies, and the people who fight for the virus's destruction without any knowledge. The enigma will now be revealed.

It's one of those books that really should be translated into English for the extreme amount of extra canon exposition it adds from Albert Wesker's point of view up to the Russia 2003 incident, but likely won't be. Which is a shame. Regardless, it's a nice collection addition.

The blurb on the back describes the book as follows:

Because of the Umbrella Corporation's intrigues, the world's dead have become zombies. After the destruction of Raccoon City, a new conspiracy is being planned in Umbrella's Russian facility. The Umbrella Company's plan, the actions of Albert Weskar, and all forecasts are all tied together into one. All the biohazard matters that started on the express train now come to a close. The conclusion of the novella from Capcom's popular, world-famous game.

Information:
I remember fondly reading this book in the car while driving between states in 2003 when I was in the USA with my parents. I'd picked up this and other missing Resident Evil novels while I was there (for a lot cheaper than the Australian price, I assure you) and was quite wrapped by them. The only thing I don't really like when it comes to City of the Dead is that it follows the non-canon Leon A, Claire B. If anything it leads to a half-baked plot thanks to this, and while S.D. Perry did an okay job at handling it, it could have been much better with the Claire A, Leon B path.

This item was a gift from my parents.

Sadly, this was released before Complete/X had been released, and so the book has half a plot. S.D. Perry was pretty much starting to go downhill from here with the novelisations.
