Games: Playstation Releases [プレイステーションのゲーム]

The Sony PlayStation. One of the largest pioneers in the 32 bit era during the fifth generation of home consoles, the PlayStation came out of left field after a botched deal with Nintendo had Sony decide to go ahead with Ken Kutaragi’s console vision. Launching in Japan during 1994, and 1995 for the rest of the world, it saw a reign of 11 years officially before it was discontinued in 2005. It was the first home console to sell over 100 million units.

Soon after its release the console became home to this now-beloved franchise and paved the way for Survival Horror in full, leading to other great titles such as the Silent Hill series from Konami, and the continuation of Human Entertainment’s Clock Tower series. Biohazard overall saw 7 releases and enhanced editions over 5 years on the system, 14 including English localised versions, building a world and lore that is still heavily entrenched in even the most recent titles as of the time of writing.

Title: BIO HAZARD (バイオ ハザード) [PS01]
Catalogue: SLPS-00222
Released: 22/03/1996
Retail: 5,800円
Region: NTSC-J
Scans: Front | Back | Manual | Sample Page | Disc

Information:
The one, the only, the very beast that started it all and brought along with it a series that has lasted over 20 years. The original game is utterly iconic in the industry, and infamous in parts due to some questionable dialogue decisions, and paved the way for the series today. The original Japanese release has a number of differences when compared to the western releases, from minute things like auto aim to assist in the fixed camera setting, to different damage tables.

The Japanese release also began a trend of what is called True Canon, as localisation work of the series from here on out sometimes strayed a bit too far from the source material. Going back to this version of the game with Japanese knowledge under my belt was really eye-opening for the different tone and nuances in the text. I'm rather fond of this copy, I love how subtle and eerie the lab artwork is for the cover vs. Action Hero Chris Redfield on the western releases.

Title: BIOHAZARD Director’s Cut (バイオハザード ディレクターズカット) [PS02]
Catalogue: SLPS-00998
Released: 25/09/1997
Retail: 4,800円
Region: NTSC-J
Scans: Front | Back | Manual | Sample Page | Disc

Information:
Director's Cut, a game released to help bridge the gap between the release of Biohazard 2 and the original after 1.5 was canned 65% of the way in. Director's Cut brought about the uncut colour footage of the infamous live action opening, and saw the addition of an arrange mode which featured new outfits, new routes and enemy placements, and items being in totally new zones. Add into it some new camera angles and some other mechanical tweaking and you've got a fairly well rounded game.

Arrange mode is pretty awesome, and is a nice way of rehashing the game again with a new twist. It also came with a special preview trial disc for Biohazard 2, the first demo for the game ever publicly issued, and first demo since 1.5 was canned officially.

Released: 22/03/2001

Scans: Case | Case Fold-Out | Disc 1 | Disc 2 | Disc 3 | Disc 4

Information:
07699/10000 -- the limited number my case has. Never thought I'd get a chance to own this, and yet here we are. Scored this via trawling Yahoo Japan during new years and the big clean outs that often happen as a result of the new year, and all due to the fact it has a small hole in the handle that can easily be epoxy resin filled/painted/sanded it came to me at under $100.

Complete.

In the bottom half of the case there is a special game case with new press release of Biohazard 1 through 3, which are our main focus here. The discs are specially printed with 'Biohazard 5th Anniversary' on their internal ring, and are numbered disc 1 through 4 for all three games. The discs also come with brand new manuals, reprinted on thick stock in a non-gloss format. Gorgeous.

To see the other items included in this, please see the case and its contents over on Other Items [OI04 onward].

Title: BIOHAZARD 15th Anniversary BOX (バイオハザード イーカプコン限定15周年ボックス) [PS09]
Catalogue: SLPM-87420~3
Released: 08/09/2011
Retail: 7,800円
Region: NTSC-J
Scans: Disc 1 | Disc 2 | Disc 3 | Disc 4

Information:
An e-Capcom exclusive, this special anniversary release came packed with a lot given it comes in at under $80. This came with a copy of the Revival Selection - a PS3 HD upscale of both Biohazard CODE:Veronica and Biohazard 4, a set of anniversary pins and stickers, physical press copies of Biohazard 1 Director's Cut through to Biohazard 3, two mini soundtracks for CODE:Veronica and Biohazard 4, and a space to slot a PS3 copy of Biohazard 5.

Kind of surreal that we had brand new, yes, brand new Playstation discs were minted and pressed in 2011. They're not re-issues either -- they have brand new catalogue numbers and all. The box also came with new manuals printed for them too; not as nice as the manuals from the 5th Anniversary release but still nice of them to do them.

Title: Resident Evil (レジデント・イービル) [PS10]
Catalogue: SLES-00200
Released: 01/08/1996
Retail: $
Region: PAL
Scans: Front | Back | Manual | Sample Page | Disc

Information:
I currently need to get a new jewel case for this copy — it’s my original jewel case from when it was given to me by my sister back in 1998, previously bought by her in 1997, and it has seen some hard love over the years. The disc too has been heavily used but doesn’t have any disc rot nor issues with reading despite many, many runs being played with it.

Catalogue: SLES-00972
Released: 29/04/1998
Retail: $
Region: PAL
Scans: Front | Back | Manual | Sample Page | Disc

Information:
Much like my copy of RE1, this copy has been very loved and very heavily played, holding a lot of sentimental value to me. It was given to me by my mother, we managed to find a trade-in second hand copy at Electronics Boutique (yes, back when it was called that!) at a really good price during school holidays back in 1998. I was having terrible issues with insomnia even back then, and I used to sit up all night on the big TV out in the living room playing the scenarios to death rather than going cocoa from the inability to sleep.

Retail: $
Region: NTSC-U

This one was a US-only release in English, with it not making it to the PAL territories at all. For sake of English-side completion, I broke my 'PAL-NTSC/J Only' rule for this release.
